TEXT: 1 JOHN 3:5-9 (EMPHASIS 8)
Purpose has to do with the “why” for a thing. It reveals the reason behind an action, event, etc.
The reason behind Jesus death. The question is why did Jesus die?
According to our text, the primary reason for Jesus’ death is to destroy the works of the devil. in his primary reason lies a plethora of sub-reasons subsumed in the main reason.
- To deal with sin and its consequences spiritual death: 1 John 3:5, Rom 3:23-25,
Rom 5:7-8. He had to take on sin upon so that he could effectively destroy sin in our lives once and for all. Sin was what separated us and is still separating what separating people from God. 2 Cor 5:18-19, Rom 5:10. He died to reconcile us back to our God so that God can be our Father, Saviour and King while we are his children, redeemed and citizens.
- To destroy sickness in our body: Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24
Jesus’ death effectively subdued the power of sickness and diseases in our body. We must acknowledge the infallible truth that his stripes ensures our healing and health.
- To destroy premature death:
Death is the consequence of alienation from God. When man sinned, he died spiritually which ultimately lead to physical death. The purpose of his death is to defeat and destoy death at all levels – spiritual death and physical death. 1 Cor 15:12-26, 53-57, John 6:48-58
You need to know that you have the life of God in you. It is the “Zoe” of God. That life is and indestructible, impenetrable life. It is important for you to know as a child of God that whatever cannot kill God, cannot kill you.
- To enjoy the riches of our inheritance: Ephesians 1:3,11,18, 3:8
One reason for his death is to destroy poverty in the life of believers and ensure that we enjoy the riches of our inheritance in Christ Jesus. The bible says God has made us heirs and joint-heirs with Christ Jesus in the Father’s common wealth. Romans 8:16-17, Ephesians 2:12 (NLT)’
- To redeem us from every curse (we are uncursable) – Gal 3:13-18
The death of Jesus has redeemed us from every known curse by dealing with the foundational curse which is the curse of the law you need to be convinced in your spirit-man that if Christ has redeemed us form the curse of the law, then we have been redeemed from every curse. Numbers 23:7, 19-23 makes it clear that we cannot be cursed by the devil, demonic forces or ancestral spirits.
- To restore us to our original status.
when Adam sinned, mankind/humanity fell from grace. Humanity fell from the place of grace, glory and authority that God has positioned him. Man fell from the “pent”. Jesus’ death was to restore us back to the place of authority. His death was to bring us up to the “pent” hence he came and preached that men should “re-pent” (return to the top) one cardinal reason for Jesus’ death is to return man to his enviable position of dominion and authority – Ephesians 2:1-6
We need to begin to enforce and appropriate these benefits of his death into our lives so that it can manifest to all.
