Topic: Walking in the love of God
Text: Eph 5:1-2
“Be ye, therefore, followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor.”
In our text, Paul talks about being followers or imitators of God.
An imitator is one who tries to act like another. So we should imitate God basically in terms of love. So, we already know that God is love and it is his nature to love: 1 John 4:8…” God is love”. This means that there is no greater expression of love than God. God is the definition of what love is and therefore he becomes our biggest example. So let us first look at some core attributes of God and what can we learn from him.
- God is a helper – He helps the helpless
- God is a provider and a sustainer – He looks after the needs of His children.
- God is a healer – He restores that which is broken
- God is a counselor – He provides guidance and direction to His people.
- God is a comforter – He provides relief to His people.
And the greatest picture of God’s love for us has been demonstrated by the life and death of Jesus as shown in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
When it came to showing God’s love, Jesus did not hold anything back. He demonstrated love without limits because He represented God’s, everlasting love.
As children of God, it is possible for us to love like this because we are God’s children, we have the same likeness, the same nature. Remember that we are made in His own image so when we love, we love like God because His love is shed abroad in our hearts and we give that love freely to everyone around us and so they begin to experience the love of God through us.
Isn’t this amazing? So when the bible says you are the light of the world this is what it meant. In a world full of hate and darkness, the light of God’s love working in us permeates through that darkness and brings people into that marvelous light of God’s love, Hallelujah!
Remember, when you think of true love, let Jesus be your first thought? When you long to love more or to be loved better, let Christ be the standard for which you are striving and always walk in the amazing love of God and you’ll see things change in your life.
God bless you!
